The “Raw” Approach to Skin

While most of us understand the distinction between organic and non-organic ingredients, not everyone understands how different raw ingredients are from refined ones, and how this affects our skin.

Raw skin care products are produced with minimal processing to maintain as many of the original vitamins and nutrients as possible. An example of minimal processing is cold processing.

Cold processing systems don’t use heat, so ingredients remain raw and powerful.Think of it like a raw vs a cooked vegetable. Raw vegetables are more nutrient-rich, and so are cold processed skin care products.

Traditional skincare products are heated to extremely high temperatures which means delicate actives get damaged. While this method is commonly used problems can arise when emulsifying agents and high temperatures (often as high as 175-195 degrees Farenheit) break down key ingredients, like essential oils, botanical extracts and vitamins. The result – a final product with active ingredients that may not be as effective as they once were due to possible changes during the heating process.*

What is true for what you eat is also true for what you put on your skin. “Rich in natural ingredients” is precisely what you should look for in skin care, but you should also look for cold processed or raw skin care products.
